George Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis, US after he was restrained to the ground by three officers, with one officer with his knee to Floyd's neck. Floyd countless times begged that he "couldn't breathe". Floyd became pulseless and unresponsive from this and lost his life that same day. This is his story, it is not the first and sadly won't be the last until something clicks within the people who hold "power".
Multiple petitions have been set up, protests have been made but no arrests. This story took the attention of the world. The public is crying for the officer to be charged with murder but the state isn't having it, the mayor of that state sides with the people, that if it was an ordinary person we would be charged with murder.
The officer has had complaints and has been involved in more incidents than what he did to Floyd. so why are things being brushed over?
For the first day of reading this story, I couldn't get my head around it. We all know there's evil in this world and there's good and bad people in all professions.
I need someone to explain to me how officers are given jobs if they harbour views that are biased, judgemental and prejudice. Are the tests, interviews not hard enough? How do they judge someones stance on racism, politics and personal opinions. Are situational tests too easy to pass and fluke? People with "power" needs more barriers to be able to earn those positions.
Then there's the weapon choice, of course America is all for guns (I am not). I just want you to think, why can't you use weapons that are not as lethal? You have officers say they felt "scared" so needed it, but realistically, how can you be scared of someone who is not armed? how can you be scared of someone who has no power when YOU have a gun? Even if someone had a knife, bat or whatever you have a gun that can hurt them from a distance? they would need to be close to you?. Then theres the doubt, does that mean officers aren't trained enough in close combat to not know how to unarm someone without using a gun?. My thought is, officers use guns because you're lazy, you're weak and you're a coward.
Other issues that come to mind is that there should be more officers who come from the bottom, streets, people who understand the lives of those who are suffering. You can tell me they have a few that are Black, working class and so on, but I am going to tell you something I learnt in sixth form, filtering. Industries filter through people to LOOK diverse, but they aren't diverse, if you get filtered you are lucky but because you are only one, two, three or four does not mean the force is representative enough. I asked this question about media if filtering is true, and I am going to answer it myself, every industry is filtered to make companies look good. Recruitment of people who have lived it, understood it and are fair is important, this is something that is an issue too that costs people lives, because people in power positions now, don't have a clue on what it's like. Even I don't have a clue on what it is like to be Black in society because I am not, but I can try and understand by not being prejudice.
My last food for thought for this post will be that the hashtag is #BLACKLIVESMATTER not allivesmatter. Why? because Black lives are at risk and it does not mean everyone else does not matter it is just highlighting there is a group right now that needs our support without us being ridiculous.
This racism, issue is everywhere not in the US and the UK is not innocent either. Here is a twitter thread of UK police brutality, don't ignore the race imbalance just because videos of police, bosses or politicians circulate online of them helping, dancing and joking with people from these communities, it is PR.
What can you do? Sign petitions, here are some below:
I pray that these times brings people together to bring change that will save many and pray for the souls who are lost to this wicked world full of people with dark hearts.
Always supporting and voting for you.
